Software giant Microsoft recently admitted that a vulnerability exists in its Internet Explorer browsing software. It allowed hackers to attack human rights organisations, prompting Google to reconsider its Chinese operations. Recently, the German and French governments have urged users to upgrade or use a different browser.
It seems that version 6 of the browser was the cause so you can quickly check with version you have installed by opening your IE browser, go to help in the toolbar and click “about Internet Explorer”. This will list the browser version you have downloaded. You can upgrade to version 7 or the latest version 8 but why not check some of the other browsers on offer like Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome.
An interesting article talking up the benefits of other browsers over IE is a good read. Granted it’s probably more aimed at developers out there but there are other ways to search the web and it’s not solely the domain of IE. IE has the market share followed by Firefox a distant second.
However, a big headache for developers of websites can be all the design and development is done viewing the finished product in Firefox, Chrome and so on only to find that the layout of the website is all over the place viewed in IE, especially version 6. If you like IE, stay with it but you need to upgrade from version 6 if you still have this.
